How to determine the Ranking Power of a Backlink

Not all backlinks are created equal. While there are tools paid and free that can determine Backlink value for you, it is good to have at least a basic understanding of how the Google Algorithm calculates Backlink value.

If in doubt consider the common sense approach.

Google’s job is to determine which websites should rank highest. How should they do this?

Web users are searching for information so Google must determine which information is of most value.

Calculating Ranking value of Backlinks by Source.

1. A website with many links pointing to it is considered a valuable site as there must be a reason so many sites want to link in. These websites will have high PageRank (PA) and high Domain Authority (DA).

2. Google considers News and Education (.edu) sites trustworthy and so links from these sources will carry a greater weight.

3. The position and surrounding text and context of the Backlink is important. Links from sites of your industry/subject are stronger as are links in the main body of an article as opposed to links hidden away in a footer or sidebar.

4. Backlinks can be Nofollow or Dofollow. Dofollow links carry ‘link juice’ – they instruct Google and other search engines that the link should influence the Ranking of the link’s target in the search engine’s index. Nofollow links do not influence the Ranking.
